Discussion / Q&A    Inspiration

Q. Who were your production idols in the music business?

A. "There are several heroes for me...

Certainly George Martin is put near the top; he was there for virtually everything The Beatles did while also a staff producer working on other projects including comedy with Peter Sellers.  Always loved what Brian Wilson was able to achieve in the recording studio. Phil Spector is a unquestionably a legend and has many classic records to his credit before he started shooting people. (some laughter).

I would also include Mickey Most in this group for several reasons. He had a very good ear and gut feeling for when a record was done; it would develop to a certain point and he'd declare it done. Mickey was also so certain about his judgment that he was not afraid to tell everybody to pack up and go home because it was just not happening that day. There were a number of people that inspired me like Norman Smith, Geoff Emerick....."

Q. What did you think of Geoff Emerick’s book?

A. Geoff is a wonderful person, quite talented all the way. He didn't quite remember everything as it was however."

Q. What about Joe Meek?

A. (smiles) Yes, Joe certainly had some interesting ideas."
